Gears of War
11/16/2007
Calmly, the beefy guy with the scarred face hunches behind a crate. Shots rip through the air. He fires blindly from behind his protective cover. Two attacking opponents are hit, and fall to their knees. The rifleman winks at me to indicate that the (lead-filled) air is clear. I lunge from behind my cover in the direction from which the Locusts came. There are none left. But the guy has nerve. He promised me an exclusive interview. But I should have known that an “exclusive” interview with as hard a nut as Marcus Fenix would go slightly differently than planned. For him, exclusive means – direct from the battlefield. In the midst of battle...
RapidGames: Hallo Marcus, tell our readers a little about yourself.
Marcus Fenix: For those who don’t know it, my name is Marcus Fenix. Most of you probably know me already. Barely a year ago, I, together with my team-mate Dom (ed. Dominic Santiago) freed the Planet Sera from the slimy Locusts on the Xbox 360. We were a success! RG: And now Epic has once again sent you into battle, Marcus. This time on another platform, the PC. The controls on the Xbox were really very intuitive. Get some cover, then open fire from behind it. Everything was transferred as well as possible. Was the adjustment easy or hard for you?
MF: It was absolutely no... GET DOWN!!! Fenix pushes me to the ground and fires three targeted salvos towards the front. Two more attacking Locusts bite the dust. Marcus deftly and busily reloads his weapons. He notes my look of incomprehension. MF: Like this, I will soon have more firepower, dude. Don’t look so dumb. As you just saw, this is not really a problem. The overall fighting is even a little easier. Even before, these damned Locusts were never the brightest. Thanks to these new controls it is now even easier to despatch these slimy creatures to the next world, or even better, send them “back whence they came”. (There is the sound of laughter). But each fight is nevertheless a challenge. RG: I heard that this adventure of yours lasts even longer than on the Xbox 360. How come?
MF: Well, the developers have taken the story further. If you already went into battle with me on the Xbox, you already know that the end was left very open. Epic simply took this tail-end, and continued the story in five new chapters. RG: So is it worth it for connoisseurs of the Xbox version to play Gears of War once again?
MF: If you want to know how the story goes on, yes. Without even batting an eyelid, Fenix lobs a grenade overhead. The deafening bang, followed by a gruesome shower of Locust body parts, leaves the Big Guy unfazed. A really cool guy. Unfortunately a little taciturn, but cool.
MF: Stop trembling, man! Let’s get this interview over with. I’ve got stuff to do.
RG: Do the five new combat areas differ from those which are already available on the Xbox 360?
MF: Only slightly. They are somewhat more extensive. But by and large, the structure remains the same. RG: Those are the only changes? MF: No. Epic gave us a new boss fight to shoot away at. Dom and I now blast away at creatures which where only glimpsed in the segue sequences on the Xbox version. Furthermore, they were visually rather stilted. If you have a high-end machine, Gears of War for Windows will run much better. RG: The longevity of Gears of War lies in its outstanding multiplayer mode. Is this likewise replicated on the PC?
MF: Yes. Although with three new maps and fresh modes. But the thing only runs over the Live Service from our Publu... Pulbi... - oh, to hell with these stupid names – from Microsoft. RG: Well then, thank you for talking to me, Marcus. I wish you every success.
MF: Yeah... get the hell out of here. This is not your war. I retreat to the rear, and can still watch how Marcus moves forward with his comrades. He chainsaws a Locust which comes round the corner at him clean in two. With one last “Forward!”, the soldiers disappear from view.
