Nexuiz

11.02.2008
Quake 3 Arena and Unreal Tournament have shown how the gameplay is done. But Nexuiz is testimony to the fact that a fast multiplayer shooter doesn't have to cost money. This is an open source shooter from Alientrap.
"The enemy has your flag — recover it". We all know this phrase. Whether it now resounds through the speakers in a distorted voice or appears on the HUD as a simple text message, it really doesn't matter. The important thing is the message. That's what the guys from Alientrap thought too, when they started to develop Nexuiz back in 2002.

Nexuiz is a straight multiplayer shooter. Sure, there's a mini campaign with a few bot matches, but they're neither challenging nor particularly interesting. Nexuiz has now set its focus on fast, exciting online battles. The highlights of the game are the familiar Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Domination and Last Man Standing modes, and are all great fun.

The graphics (hard as it is to believe) are provided by a modified version of the Quake engine from 1996. Despite the dowdy basic framework, the game looks great and shows how an engine can be stretched without inflating the hardware requirements. A thumbs up for Nexuiz!
