StepMania

14.03.08
I only managed to get through the first two songs in Guitar Hero 3 after much stress and grief. Yes, I know, practice makes perfect, but Frets on Fire also wasn’t much better - I could at least then blame the shapeless G11 keyboard from Logitech. Luckily, there is still StepMania: the only disadvantage here is that I can no longer blame the keyboard. StepMania gets along very well with keyboards, gamepads and even dancemats!
StepMania is simply built, but it goes a long way. Depending on the difficulty level, a higher or lower number of arrow symbols move upwards across the screen. Your task is to react to the marked arrows with the correct input on the keyboard, or preferably a dancemat. A static display of all of the arrows at the upper edge of the screen gives you a clue as to when it is time to do this. The music provides long, short and delayed strokes, and depending on the version and song, the songs also have mine symbols (definitely do not step on these!) and a confusing background to make the musician’s life more difficult.

A large player community and various websites offer enough material for StepMania to keep you entertained for weeks, if not months. There are also various different versions and the possibility of playing online. The songs are not contained within the game itself, but are abundantly available on the internet either individually or are packages. There is something for everyone, from trite techno songs through to excellent remixes of well-known Zelda tunes. So go on, get your dancing shoes on!
