Trackmania Nations

Forever

23.04.2008
A game usually stays in fashion until the community is sick of it. So it is good if the developer has close ties to the community. Infinity Ward, for example, published a map pack for CoD4, which broke all previous DLC records. New maps for the community and an already sophisticated multiplayer system give the game a substantially longer lifespan. Developer Nadeo however, takes a different approach by simply including an Editor with their free-of-charge race game. Voilà. Hours of solo, LAN or online gaming fun are guaranteed.

The name Trackmania will probably ring a bell... or rather go “click” in your head. Everyone knows of the game, and most of you have already played it, because the game principle of Trackmania allows sessions for hours on end. It just can’t get boring! Why do I make such a statement? Because the game now has a powerful track editor, which despite its complexity is simple to use.

And this is what makes Trackmania Nations Forever so successful. A free game that can never get boring, because there are thousands of new tracks in the internet, and you can create your own tracks as well. Trackmania’s motto has always been, “Design it. Build it. Race it!” The provided tracks are not simple, dull circular tracks, which pose no challenge once you got the hang of your own (single!) vehicle. No – Trackmania offers much more. Jumps and loops and other obstacles just wait to be mastered on unknown tracks and to be included your own.

Yet this racing game from Nadeo is not only a case of “download or design your own tracks, otherwise you can’t play”. Even the free version offers more than 65 different tracks with increasing degrees of difficulty for you to master. Three available difficulty levels, in the shape of “faster” opponents for you to beat, keep whole thing nicely challenging. Great: when you foul up a tricky chicane or obstacle, you can re-start the race at the push of a button, without any loading time. This is also direly needed, because some racetracks are difficult to master. You are awarded one medal per degree of difficulty for each track that you “win”. Come first on track one with the easiest difficulty level, and you receive a bronze medal, which is credited to your account. Beat the second course with difficulty level two and you receive two medals - the bronze and the silver medals. Now two medals are credited to your account. You need these medals to rise on the online scoreboard. The more medals, the better your position amongst your thousands of fellow players.

Conclusion
Ok, Trackmania Nations Forever only offers you as single vehicle and only one “environment” (stadium). But who cares? Thank to the excellent editor, the single mode and an ever-increasing number of new tracks in the Internet it never gets boring. For any arcade racing game fan, Trackmania Nations Forever is practically a must-have.
