Civilization Revolution

16.06.08
I have seen all of the great civilizations come and go. The proud and belligerent Romans, whom fell into the dust before me, had their homeland of Rome burned. The delicate and clever Egyptians, with their impressive pyramids have been covered by the sands of time. The mystic and fabled Aztecs, their temples became ruins and are rotting in the jungle. They all had no chance against my empire, which has outlasted the centuries. I could beat them in all disciplines, in science, culture, economics and finally, militarily. Gunpowder and steel were mightier than stone and wood. But they not only wanted to destroy my realm from the outside, inside it was also seething constantly, revolts, revolutions, uprisings. Only plenty of diplomacy and entertainment could put my people on the right track. Before I reached for the stars – the history of humanity took place on my PC in a few balmy summer nights.

Nowadays that is a lot faster. Civilization Revolution links seamlessly to the well-known principle of the Civilization series and offers the development from cuneiform writing to the laser-beam in fast-forward. You begin small, with a placid village in the middle of nowhere. In time, various achievements of humanity are investigated. The small horde develops from the Neanderthal man to civilized humans. In the beginning rather ancient abilities such as horse-riding or learning the alphabet were in the curriculum, in later eras it was splitting the atom or electricity. You are able to equip your cities depending on the level of research. A marketplace increases the trade volume, a temple raises the contentment in the city, and an aqueduct caters for cleanliness. The level of troops is dependent on the current development. At first, only a few bowmen are available. As your level increases, cavalry are available. Finally, after research of steel is applied, heavy equipment such as tanks or cruisers are added. That way a few strange constellations arise: cavalry transports a tank; a catapult is flanked by bombs. The fight is now a bit more balanced, the factor of chance was reduced. A cannon now blows a few spear throwers away – guaranteed.

Not only are other people eager to develop and disturb the spoils of your own tribe, you also have to keep order inside your poeple. To keep the unsatisfied citizens from an uproar, different places of entertainment such as temples or theatres must be built. An adequate supply of food is also needed. Otherwise, revolution quickly ensues and you may be forced to resign. A change in the power structure can also increase the happiness of your subordinates. Depending on the form of government, there are advantages and disadvantages: Democracy boosts science, but makes it impossible to declare war; communism increases productivity, but causes discontent in the state. A change of the form of sovereignty must therefore be considered thoroughly. Otherwise, it can happen quickly that the people storm the barricades.

All this is well known from the series and still everything is a bit different in Civilization Revolution. To make the round based strategy game fit for consoles, the concept was cleaned up and accelerated greatly. The times where you slowly brought your realm to blossom are gone, at least with the consoles. Constantly new conflicts are waiting for you; the people are packed closely, no chance without using your elbows. Anyone who does not provide plenty of space to expand as quickly as possible, will soon end as a little plant that slowly withers. The diplomatic possibilities are strongly limited and in the end everything leads to an armed conflict.

Although there are four ways to achieve victory, the military’s path is usually the fastest and most effective. Instead, you can face the challenge and try to win economically by piling up 20,000 gold units. If you choose the path of knowledge and become the first person in space. Finally, one’s own tribe can shake off the other people culturally by collecting a certain number of historical prominence and miracles. All this is interwoven with each other so that in the end the one who constantly pushes his research lies in front.

Conclusion
What remains is an ambivalent, but nonetheless impressive Civilization experience. The game is quick and definitely has the charm of the series – the depth is there, but is somewhat subdued by the speed. The consoles are definitely wrong for anyone who just wants to research and develop quietly. The no frills option of Civilization is ideal for a quick shot of strategy in the evening. Whether the multiplayer mode turns out to be a blessing will have to be seen when there are enough people to compete against or with each other – the options are sufficient. Civilization Revolution is not quite the promised revolution – but a nice offspring of the series to invest a few hours of your life into. MK
